The Kindly Nun In 1976 a Bankstown lady shared a touching story from her chlldhood with readers of the Sun-Herald. As the result of illness she had gone deaf when quite small and had been unable to learn to read or write, despite the efforts of an elderly nun who sent her letters and cards to encourage her. The kindly nun died and no one else bothered about the little girl, assuming that she would always be illiterate, then to the little girls amazement (and, she admitted terror) , the ghost of the nun appeared to her one night and the next morning she found herself scribbling on paper and reading comics. The ghost appeared to the little girl seven more times over a period of months, and at the end of that time she could read and write fluently - and no one had taught her.
