Charlie still on duty In Victoria Barracks, on Oxford Street Paddington, the ghost of Private Charles Crowley (of the North Devonshire Regiment) is still doing his duty. “Charlie” shot dead Sergeant Pearson after an argument at the Barracks in 1853, while awaiting court martial he became so filled with remorse over this that he hung himself. Many people have encountered “Charlie” but it would seem he means no menace. Warrant Officer Bert White and his young family lived in the old Provost Sergeants quarters above the prison cells. W.O. White described Charlie's ghost as young, tall and wearing an old Army greatcoat, he often glided through walls. The Whites believed he kept them from harm on 2 separate occasions, once a piece of falling masonary was suspended in mid-air while Mr's White quickly snatched one of her children out of harms way. Another time Mr's White was shopping and received a sudden strong feeling that she must return home. When she did return home, she found the children had lit a fire, endangering themselves and the building. Mrs White attributes this feeling to Charlie sending her a psychic message. |
