19th Century scientist Sir J.C.Bose did a lot of research on plant response to different physical stimulation . Physical stimulation can be the application of water, fertilizer, poison or the plucking of leaves and cutting branches . He found each time that plants respond to the stimulation . He registered them electronically and captured their responses on recording papers . He wrote many books about his findings and presented his findings to scientific community of his time.
Further information about his books is available here http://www.borderlands.com/plantresearch.htm The present scientific term for measuring stress of any living organism is “GSR” or Galvanic Skin Response or Resistance .scientists have found that this parameter changes for humans and depends on the stress condition of the operator's mind. Lie detector instrumentation is also used within this parameter to find out if somebody is true to his statement or under stress to give a false statement. Futher information is available here http://www.hackcanada.com/ice3/wetware/gsr.html In the 20th century, Dr. Backster has done a lot of research on plants and his findings of the consciousness of plants is very interesting. He found GSR for a plant changes as he thinks of harming the plant. This shows plants react to Dr Backsters thoughts before any physical action takes place. Later many people have done experiment on that finding , known as, “BACKSTER EFFECT”. Further information is available here: http://skepdic.com/plants.html I did some experiments to find out how the resistance changes with simple effects like applying heat on a leaf, watering and other simple causes. I also found resistance changes quite a bit. You can also do similar experiment if you have a multi-meter fitted with a galvanometer ( which can measure micro- ampere current ) . I have attached photograph of the set up .
