When holidaying truckdriver Tom Robinson took four snapshots of the historic cemetery in Picton , New South Wales , he captured more on film than he had bargained for. Mr Robinson developed the pictures several days later in Brighton , Victoria . ‘The moment I saw the last one I got a bit of a shock, ‘ he told Journalist and author John Pinkney. ‘Above two of the headstones bright lights were floating, they seemed to be shaped like human head and shoulders' Tom Robinson took the snapshots at Easter 1985 while experimenting with a new roll of 1000 ASA high speed film. The first three shots show only the graveyard. On the fourth, taken a split second later, the shapes appear. ‘I didn't see anything when I clicked the camera' Tom said. ‘But I do remember experiencing a very weird sensation. I was as if I was being watched. It wasn't frightening – just odd. Whatever the lights are, they're on both the print and the negative. If there are ghosts in that graveyard, Im anxious to know if anyone else has seen them.' District historian Bruce Knox said he had studied several reports of phantoms in the Picton area' A clairvoyant who was here recently claimed she'd spoken to the spirit of a 17 year old girl near the graveyard' he said. ‘And there was an ealier sighting near the cemetery. In 1910, two teenage girls were frozen with fright when they saw a dark figure pass in front of their kerosene lamp. ‘This report was particularly convincing because the girls confided it solely to their diaries which didn't become public until after their deaths. ‘I don't believe in ghosts, but if Im wrong, there are plenty of dead people who could be responsible for the grave lights. Many convicts were buried in the cemetery during the 1830's At least one, Edward Yates, committed suicide. Some people think his spectre is hanging about.
